Railway Operators

As of April, 2008, Korea has 10 railway and facility operators including KORAIL running both conventional and high speed lines, Korea Rail Network Authority - facility operator and metro subway operators in major cities nationwide including Seoul Metro, Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation, Busan Transportation Corporation, Daegu Metropolitan Subway Corporation, Incheon Rapid Transit Corporation, Gwangju Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation, Daejeon Express Train Corporation and Airport Railroad Co., Ltd., the only private railway operator running between Incheon International Airport and Gimpo Airport.

KORAIL
  • The National Railway Administration under the Ministry of Construction and Transportation split into Korea Railway Corporation responsible for operating railway networks and Korea Rail Network Authority in charge of facility construction and maintenance on January 1, 2005, and Korea Railway Corporation used KORAIL as its brand name interchangeably and adopted it as the single official name on May 7, 2007. KORAIL's mission has been to enhance professionalism and efficiency in railway operation and contribute to the advancement of railway industry and national economy since its birth more than a century ago in 1899 to open the era of 'Iron Silkroad' linking the Northeastern Asia and Europe.
Seoul Metro
  • After establishment in July, 1970, Seoul Metropolitan Subway Construction Division built Subway Lines 1 and 2 and Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation spun off from the division in September, 1981 and completed Line 2 in May, 1984 and Lines 3 and 4 in October, 1985 respectively. Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation implemented automatic fare collection systems along the entire lines in the Greater Seoul area in 1986 and changed its name to Seoul Metro. As of 2008, Seoul Metro operates 4 subway lines including Subway Line 1 to 4 stretching 134.9km in total and a fleet of 1,944 trains, serving 3.92 million passengers on daily average.
Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation (SMRTC)
  • As the ground-breaking ceremony of Subway Line 5 construction project opened the 2nd chapter of Seoul metropolitan subway in June, 1990, Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation (SMRTC) was born in March 15, 1994 in response to a call for a separate subway operator independent of Seoul Metro. SMRTC's mission is to contribute to the welfare and interest of citizens by promoting the advancement of metropolitan traffic service and providing safe and rapid public transportation mode including Subway Lines 5 to 8. As of now in 2008, SMRTC 4 runs subway lines stretching 152km in total and a fleet of 1,561 trains, serving 1.62 million passengers on daily average.
Incheon Rapid Transit Corporation (IRTC)
  • Incheon Rapid Transit Corporation began operation upon completion of Gyoolhyeon Station in October, 1999 and now runs a subway line stretching 24.6㎞ with 22 stations and a R/S depot at Gyoolhyeon.
Busan Transportation Corporation (BTC)
  • Busan Transportation Corporation (BTC) is responsible for promoting the advancement of metropolitan traffic service and contributing to the welfare and interest of citizens by constructing and operating public transportation network within Busan metropolitan area. As of 2008, BTC now runs 3 subway lines including Busan Subway Line 1 (Nopodong St. ~Sinpyeong St., 32.5Km, 34 subway stops), Line 2 (Yangsan ~ Jangsan, 46Km, 42 subway stops) and Line 3 Sooyeoung ~ Daejeo Section (18.3Km, 17 subway stops).
Daegu Metropolitan Subway Corporation (DMSC)
  • Daegu Metropolitan Subway Corporation (DMSC) opened Line 1 (Jincheon~Anshim, 25.9Km) in May 1998 and Line 2 (Moonyang~Sawol, 28Km) in October, 2005. As of 2008, DMSC now runs subway lines stretching 53.9㎞ in total with 56 subway stops and 384 trains consisting of 34 trainsets (204 trains) for Line 1 and 30 trainsets (180 trains) for Line 2 respectively.
Gwangju Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation (GMRTC)
  • Gwangju Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation (GMRTC) opened Line 1 Section 1 from Nokdong St.~Sangmoo St. on April 28, 2004 and Section 2 from Sangmoo St.~Okdong Depot stretching 8.14km in total in April, 2008. In addition, GMRTC plans to construct Loop Line 2 running 27.4km and Line 3 (20.3km) linking Paekwoon Plaza, Namgu and Gwangsan High-Tech Industrial Complex.
Daejeon Express Train Corporation (DETC)
  • Daejeon Express Train Corporation (DETC) completed Line 1 (Panam∼Banseok, 22 subway stops) in April, 2007. Line 1 stretches 22.6km in total and includes 22 subway stops, 2 R/S depots and 1 control center. 22 subway stops are 700~1,500m from each other and DETC will build Line 2 which will be a loop line (31 stops, 25.4㎞) and Line 3 which will link to the northeastern urban district (Gudodong~Sintanjin, 23 stops, 25.4㎞), completing a subway network with 3 lines stretching 78.8㎞ in total with 76 stops.
Airport Railroad Co., Ltd.
  • Incheon International Airport Railroad is the 1st private railway project where a private entity will develop project plan, design, construct and operate a 61km-long railway line specifically to provice access to and from the Incheon International Airport. Incheon International Airport Railroad is a double-track line with 10 stops and 1 R/S depot. Construction started in April, 2001 and proceeded in 40.3km section in phase 1 (Incheon Int'l Airport~Gimpo Airport, 6 stops) until March, 2007 and in 20.3km section in phase 2 (Gimpo Airport~Seoul St.) from January, 2004 to December, 2009. Airport Railroad Co., Ltd. will operate the railway for 30 years after completion of phase 2 according to the BTO (Build, Transfer and Operate) agreement before donating the railway to the government.
Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA)
  • Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA) started off as an authority on January 1, 2004 in the wake of the enforcement of the Korea Rail Network Authority Act on July 29, 2003. KRNA is a government agency that has combined the construction function of the ex-Korea Railway Administration and the ex-Korea High Speed Rail Construction Authority. KRNA's major missions include construction/maintenance of railway infrastructure, construction of railway in other countries, linking the railway networks in two Koreas, construction of the Northeast Asian railway network, development/maintenance/promotion of railway infrastructure technologies, development/operation of station and line-adjacent areas, railway crossing modernization project, etc.
